Depower, gather, wrap, stuff (the sequence you drilled on land). Then do nothing for three or four seconds. Hold a straight line slightly off dead-downwind, let the board find its trim, and check the bundle is fully captured in the belt before you start hunting bumps.
Look 20–50 m ahead, not at your nose. You are hunting the direction in which the water surface is falling away: the moving 'downhill' across the swell field. It is rarely straight downwind.
Sit on the back third of a rolling bump, where gravity works for you and speed is free. If the bump steepens under your nose you have overrun it: flatten out and shed a little speed rather than burying the tip in the trough.
Leave a dying bump on a diagonal line across the swell so you arrive at the next pocket of energy with speed, entering it from behind. Straight-downwind exits drop you into the flat spot between trains.
Short, well-timed foil pumps bridge the gap between bumps. Constant pumping burns your legs and kills glide rhythm. If a transition needs more than a handful of pumps, your line choice was wrong: fix the line, not the pump rate.
The moment your rhythm breaks (bump train fading, legs going, wind band ahead looking dead), commit to the redeploy while you still have board speed and clean water. Deploying from a moving board on foil beats relaunching from the water after you have splashed down in a lull.
The glide is what you came for. Launch, upwind legs, the stash itself: all of it exists so you can put the wing in your belt and ride open-water swell hands-free. Half of this skill, bump reading, is borrowed from SUP and prone downwind foiling and is taught well elsewhere. The other half is parawing-specific and barely documented anywhere: when to glide, when to redeploy, and how to manage your energy between those two states. The weight here is on the second half.
Do not start downwind glides until all of these are true:
Wind made the bumps, but the bumps are what you ride, and the usable energy rarely runs dead-downwind. Swell trains cross, refract and overlay, so the downhill wanders left and right of the wind line all run. Wake Style’s bump-reading guide frames it as reading moving lines of pressure and release rather than a compass heading.
Two habits pay more than any others. Watch texture: the darker, smoother backs of bumps are your lanes, while short steep faces stacking ahead mean you are converging with a train, which is good if you enter from behind and bad if it runs you over. And track trains, not individual bumps. Individual bumps die in seconds, trains persist, and you spend the run hopping between them.
Here is the wrinkle nobody mentions. A diagonal that keeps a crosswind component leaves you line tension if you have to deploy suddenly. A long dead-downwind line means any emergency deploy happens with minimal apparent wind and a soggy, reluctant canopy. When two lines look equally fast, take the one that keeps the crosswind.
Otherwise think in zig-zags with a purpose: each leg ends at a target you picked two bumps ago. When the field serves up a clean organised train, straighten out and run the conveyor; when it degrades, go back to hunting diagonally.
A downwinder runs on three tanks:
Spend tank 1 first, tank 2 sparingly, tank 3 deliberately rather than desperately. If your legs burn in the first third of a run, you are substituting tank 2 for tank 1, and no amount of fitness fixes bad reading.
Tank 3 is the judgment call that defines parawing downwinding, and the rule is: decide early, deploy with speed. The strongest position to redeploy from is on foil, moving, with the wing tossed into clean apparent wind (mechanics in the Green Hat stow-and-deploy tutorial and BRM’s video library). The weakest is floating in a lull with a wet canopy. Every second you delay past the point where the run is dying, you slide from the first toward the second.
Triggers that should flip you from glide to deploy:
The inverse holds. Do not deploy because one bump died; if the next pocket is one solid transition away, pump for it.
Venue changes the calculus. On runs with dense, reliable energy, such as the Gorge’s wind-against-current bumps on the roughly 12 km Viento to Hood River line or Maui’s Maliko conveyor, single-stash runs with zero mid-run deploys are the community benchmark, and the gear was designed around exactly that. On venues with fickle wind bands, planned mid-run deploys through known light patches are simply good strategy. Before your first committing run, write down your deploy triggers and your bail-out points while you are still on the beach. The glide will argue with you out there. The list will not.
The glide itself is identical: same bumps, same lines, same pumping. What differs is the start and the exit: a parawing replaces the brutal paddle-up with a wind-powered takeoff, and the stashed wing gives you a mid-run reset button a paddler does not have. That reset only works if your stash and redeploy are reliable.
Sometimes (that is the parawing's safety edge over a paddler or a deflated wing), but do not treat it as guaranteed. Redeploying works when you have wind and untangled lines; it does not save you from an offshore drift in a dying breeze. Plan bail-out points before you launch, like any downwinder.
