Bleed speed or come off foil so you have both hands and a stable platform. Check that you are clear of breaking waves and other riders downwind: the wing will open into that space.
Draw the bar and bundle out of the stash belt in one motion, keeping your grip on the bar the whole time. A dropped bundle in swell is the most common way riders lose a parawing entirely.
Reverse your stow: unwrap the lines from the bar so the canopy is free to catch wind. If the wrap doesn't come apart cleanly, stop: a forced redeploy from a bad stow guarantees a tangle.
If you always stow on the same tack, you always know which side the leading edge is on, so orient by habit, not by hunting. Grab the leading edge with your front (right) hand, pull the bar out with the other, and straighten the trailing edge. Check the lines are clean with no knots before you go further.
Take one part of the leading edge in the fingers of your bar hand and the other part in your free hand, and stretch it open like an accordion so the wind fills it. Don't yank the wing straight overhead at full power: airflow inflates the canopy, your arms don't.
Once you see it filling, let go — but not both hands together. Release one hand first, then a beat later the other, so the lines tension smoothly and the wing opens without a jerk.
Once the canopy is pressurized, sheet in smoothly, rise onto foil, and settle on your heading. If anything looks partially inflated or crossed, depower and sort it before loading it up.
Stashing gets the wing out of your hands so you can glide. Redeploying is what makes that decision reversible. Until your redeploy is reliable, every stash is a one-way bet: if the wing doesn’t come back out clean, you are paddling home. What follows is the full sequence from belt to powered-up, what to do when it goes wrong, and the drills that make the whole thing boring. It pairs directly with stashing mid-ride; read that first if you haven’t, because most failed redeploys are really failed stows.

Understanding the physics kills the most common mistake. A parawing has no inflatable structure; nothing holds its shape except airflow. When you pull the bundle out of the belt, you are holding a wet rag on strings. The only thing that turns it back into a wing is wind getting under the leading edge and pressurizing the canopy front-to-back. Your job is to arrange the conditions for that and then not interfere.
That is why the sequence runs orientation first, inflation second, power last. Hold the bar in front of you, let the canopy trail downwind at or just above the surface, and find the marked center panel so you know which edge is which. Then feed the lines out gradually. Fed slowly, the wing opens progressively through the wind window: the leading edge catches air, the canopy cracks open span-wise, and pressure builds before load does. Yanked straight overhead, it goes from rag to full power in half a second, and if anything is crossed you have just loaded the tangle.
Design matters here, so know what your wing will do. Single-skins pop open fastest; that quick deploy is the reason they dominate the stash-and-glide use case. Reflex and double-skin designs relaunch cleanly but need proper orientation first; they reward the extra second spent finding the center panel. Neither type inflates while soaked. In light wind (the problem zone sits around 12–15 kt) a waterlogged canopy won’t lift, so bunch the leading edge to drain it and toss it skyward, same as on a fresh launch.

Choosing the moment matters more than any hand movement. You want steady wind, no breaking water, clear space downwind. The wing opens into your downwind zone, and anything in it (a wave, another rider, your own board leash) becomes part of the redeploy. On a downwind run, the natural moment is when you have dropped off foil and the bump train has gone flat. The pull from the belt should be one deliberate motion with your grip established on the bar before the bundle clears the belt. Riders on the forums repeatedly report losing wings stowed in the belt after a crash, and the same failure happens on a sloppy pull. Bar first, always. The bundle hangs from your bar hand while your free hand does the unwrapping.
The unwrap is where the quality of your stash pays out or doesn’t. A clean wrap unwinds in two or three turns and the canopy falls away downwind, still connected by orderly lines. Short linesets (2–4 m on most parawings) are the saving grace: there simply isn’t much line to tangle, and what does tangle is within arm’s reach to sort. If the wrap fights you, stop. Sit on the board, put the bar between your teeth or under a knee if you need both hands, and sort it while floating. Never sort mid-ride.
Inflation is patience. Wing trailing downwind, bar neutral, feed the lines. When the leading edge catches you will feel the first tug; resist the reflex to sheet in hard. Let the canopy fill along its span, then bring it up through the window with one smooth, continuous input. The wing should arrive overhead already pressurized, not get dragged there limp.
Power-up is a normal water start from here. Build board speed on an angle around 45° off downwind, pump the canopy smoothly if you need drive, and rise onto foil. If you were already moving (a rolling redeploy), apparent wind does most of the inflation work for you, which is exactly why rolling redeploys are both faster and less forgiving.
Three variants, in ascending difficulty. Sitting on the board is the beginner default: stable platform, both hands free, no time pressure. Floating beside the board is what you will actually do after a wipeout with a stashed wing; the mechanics are identical but you are managing the board too. Rolling redeploy, pulling and reinflating while still moving and ideally still on foil, is the advanced version that makes wave riding and connected downwind legs seamless. Don’t attempt it until your static redeploy is near 100%, because a snagged line at speed slams the wing into the water and you with it.
For reference on how fast the round-trip can get: a practiced stow is quick, and a practiced redeploy from a clean stash is of the same order. Early on, expect it to be much slower and messier than that. Forum riders cite roughly 50–75% clean-redeploy success rates when starting out, with partial stows failing far more often than full ones.
Failure looks like one of three things: a knotted bundle that won’t unwrap, a canopy that opens crossed and spins, or a wing that inflates partially and stalls.
The response is the same for all three: come off foil, depower completely, and sort while floating. Pulling on tangled lines will never inflate the wing; it only sets the knots. Work from the bar toward the canopy, using the color coding to separate left from right, exactly as you do in the pre-flight line walk on land. Short lines mean most tangles resolve in under a minute of calm sorting. If the canopy itself is knotted through the bridles, you are into repack territory: fully collapse it, re-stash properly, and either restart the sequence or head in. Know when to stop trying. Wind dying, drifting toward the break, same untangle failed twice: stash the mess as best you can, use the board as flotation, and paddle. A stowed parawing adds negligible drag on the prone paddle in; that is the whole self-rescue advantage of this sport. Deciding to paddle two minutes earlier is always cheaper than one more failed attempt in worsening conditions.

Done right, the redeploy is ten unremarkable seconds between two glides. Aim for boredom: run the waist-deep cycles until stashing costs you nothing, because that is when you start using the stash the way the sport intends. The rest of the intermediate curriculum is in the learn hub.
Pull the bundle from your stash belt, unwrap the lines from the bar, and hold the bar in front of you with the canopy trailing downwind on or just above the surface. Let wind get under the leading edge and feed the lines out gradually: the wing inflates from airflow, not from pulling. Sheet in once it's pressurized.

Three usual causes: lines wrapped or crossed during a rushed stow, a soaked canopy that's too heavy to lift, or trying to inflate it by force with no airflow under the leading edge. Come off foil, sort the lines while floating, drain the canopy, and restart the sequence. Pulling harder on tangled lines never inflates the wing.
Forum riders cite roughly 50–75% clean-redeploy rates early on, heavily dependent on how clean the preceding stash was. The failure is almost always created during the stow, not the redeploy itself. Land drills raise the rate fast.
Redeploying inside the break is the highest-risk moment in the sport. A downed canopy loaded by white water acts like a dragnet, and lines under wave tension can injure you. Redeploy outside the impact zone or paddle clear first.
