Come in on a broad reach with more speed than you think you need, slightly powered, foil riding mid-mast. Pick a clear patch of water downwind; the whole rotation drifts that way.
Initiate the carve as you would a hard jibe, then push the bar down and away while rolling your wrist into the turn. This keeps a clean airfoil on the canopy so it banks with you instead of collapsing or backwinding (the Triple Seven powered-turn technique).
The dead spot is the downwind third of the circle: apparent wind drops, line tension goes soft. Keep the carve tight and the foil driving; board speed carries you through, not the wing.
As the board comes back up through the wind, steer the handle to the new side early so the canopy is already loading when you exit. Late hands here means a backwinded, deflating wing wrapped into your rotation.
Exit on your original tack (full 360) or ride away switch (540 of board, 360 of wing; your choice). Sheet in progressively; a snatch at the bar on a half-inflated canopy collapses it.
Decide in advance: if the wing collapses mid-rotation, let the bar go, fall away from the lines, and sort it out floating. Never wrap a hand or wrist into anything before a trick.
There is no parawing freestyle discipline. No events, no judging criteria, no dedicated freestyle wings. The sport itself is barely two years old, counting from BRM’s Maliko V1, the first upwind-capable parawing, launched on August 21, 2024. What “freestyle” means in practice in 2026 is a single rideable move family, the powered carving 360, plus an argument about airs that got serious when the Progression Project forum opened its “Parawing Freestyle” thread on May 9, 2026 and has produced no repeatable method since. That sets the scope here: the 360 taught in full, the aerial question given its actual status, and plenty of space for the one thing every freestyle attempt guarantees. You are going to crash, a lot, with a soft wing and thin lines near your body.
If you’re earlier in the progression, this belongs after the rest of the advanced curriculum. Get your jibes automatic and your stash reliable before you spend whole sessions falling on purpose.
Do not start rotations until all of these are true:
Conditions: steady wind, enough power that you’re not scratching for speed, flat water or small organized swell, and depth. You are going to fall on the foil, repeatedly.
A parawing 360 is not a wing-foiling 360. There is no rigid frame to push against, no vertical lift to lean on. There is a soft canopy on short lines that only exists as a flying object while air moves through it correctly, which makes the whole move a negotiation between board speed and canopy pressure.
Entry. Come in on a broad reach, powered, with real speed. Speed is your budget for the downwind third of the circle where the wing goes quiet; enter slow and you will spend the back half of the rotation stalling. Ride mid-mast, not high. You want margin in both directions when the pull changes abruptly.
The bank. The piece most riders miss, and it comes from Triple Seven’s powered-turn technique: as you initiate the carve, push the bar down and away from you while rolling your wrist into the turn. The canopy then banks with the board and keeps a clean, loaded airfoil instead of luffing at the tip or backwinding. Done right, the wing pulls you around the arc. Done wrong, bar left neutral and the board carving alone, the canopy deflates over your head and you finish the rotation towing a wet sock.
Through downwind. The downwind third is the dead zone. Apparent wind collapses, line tension drops to almost nothing, the wing contributes essentially zero. Two things carry you through: the board speed you banked at entry, and a tight radius, because the longer you spend pointed downwind the more energy bleeds away. Keep the foil driving with steady front-foot pressure. Do not pump the canopy here. A parawing can’t be pumped like an inflatable wing, and yanking soft lines just distorts the airfoil.
Through the wind. As the nose comes back up toward the wind, get your hands ahead of the board: steer the handle toward the new side early, with the same anticipation you use in a jibe exit; Finn Spencer’s jibe tutorial is the reference for that hand timing. If the wing arrives on the new side already loading, the exit powers itself. If your hands are late, the canopy backwinds exactly when you have the least speed to survive it.
Exit. Sheet in progressively. The canopy at exit is often only partially inflated, and a hard snatch at the bar collapses the trailing edge. Ride away on your original tack for the full 360, or take the switch exit and convert it into a foot change once you’re stable. On swell the move gets easier, not harder: use a bump for the downwind third the way you would in a downwind glide, and the dead zone stops being dead.
Hops and jumps, as of today: talk, plus a handful of outlier clips. Not technique. The Progression Project thread is openly speculative: one rider calls parawing jumping “unlikely” if the wing is defined by being stashable, another argues a racing-style wing could do it. Kai Lenny has reportedly landed airborne parawing maneuvers, and his Hookipa parawing-plus-longboard session shows where the crossover ceiling sits. But nobody, including the brands, has published a method, and the gear is actively signaling the opposite direction: Duotone’s 2026 Paradox SLS parawing board ships with a front-strap-only option specifically to avoid jumping.
From principle rather than measurement: any air on a parawing is a dead-stick air. The moment line tension goes slack in flight, the canopy stops being a wing, so whatever you take off with, you land as a foiler holding a handful of fabric. If you experiment anyway, keep it to small unhooked-style hops off swell, over deep water, alone in the landing zone, and expect the canopy to be collapsed when you touch down. That’s an experiment log, not a tutorial; one will get published here when there is a repeatable sequence to teach. You will crash more learning rotations than in any other part of the curriculum, and parawing crashes have their own physics.
Let go of the bar. The instinct from winging, to hang onto the handle through the fall, is wrong here. Falling with the bar in hand pulls the canopy and its bridle set down on top of you. Release, fall away from where the wing will land, then swim to the bar. Only the bar reliably floats; a soaked canopy sinks, so don’t take your time.
Never fall into tension. The genuinely dangerous scenario is lines under load across your body. A downed parawing with water or wave pressure on the canopy acts like a dragnet, which is why rotations happen away from breaking waves, full stop, and why you carry a line cutter and wear neoprene for line contact, same kit logic as self-rescue. MACkite’s safety writeup of Jeff’s near-misses covers the leash and PFD mistakes that compound all of this. Most riders fly the wing leashless precisely so a crash can’t turn into being tethered to a dragging canopy; if you do run a leash it needs a quick release you can find blind.
Check the belt after every crash. Multiple riders report losing a stashed wing out of the belt in a wipeout without noticing. If you fell hard with a wing stowed, physically confirm it’s still there before riding on. Discovering an empty belt two kilometers downwind converts a trick session into a self-rescue.
Untangle floating, never riding. If the crash leaves lines wrapped, come fully off foil and sort it drifting. Pulling on a tangled set won’t inflate anything and tightens whatever is around you.
Nobody owns parawing freestyle yet. The riders willing to put in structured, crash-heavy sessions now are the ones who will define it. Do your defining in deep water.

Drive through the downwind soft spot on board speed, steer the handle to the new side before you pass through the wind, and re-power on exit.
It is a frontier, not a discipline. Powered carving 360s are being ridden today, racing is starting (the SFT Downwind Parawing World Cup ran its first season in 2026), but there are no freestyle events, no judging criteria, and no dedicated freestyle wings. Riders like Balz Müller are pushing big moves, and the consensus is that the current gear is version one.
A wing that holds shape when depowered on the front lines. Double-skin or reflex designs like the Triple Seven P.T. carve powered turns with the least tip collapse. Note that dedicated parawing boards are trending the other way from freestyle: Duotone's 2026 Paradox SLS ships with a front-strap-only option specifically to discourage jumping.
Let the bar go. Per Duotone, a released parawing typically flies a few meters, lands, and collapses, with the bar staying on the surface; swim to it before the canopy sinks. Falling while gripping the bar is how you end up inside your own lines.
