The moment the fall is inevitable, throw the bar downwind, away from where your body will land. A released parawing typically flies a few meters, lands, and collapses with the bar staying on the surface. It is not going anywhere fast.
Fall long and flat, upwind or to the side of the board, arms covering your head. The foil is the sharpest thing in the water; the lines are second.
Come up, check where the board, the canopy, and the line field are. Do not swim blind: swimming into submerged lines is how wraps happen.
Swim to the bar, not to the canopy. Take the bar and gather line tension toward you hand over hand; parawing lines are short, so this takes seconds, not minutes. Sort any tangle while floating and unloaded. Never pull against a tangle.
Get the board between you and the wing risk-free zone, climb on from the windward side into a kneeling or sitting position, keep the bar in your rear hand. Bunch the leading edge to drain water if the canopy is soaked.
Toss the leading edge into the air, let airflow inflate it (do not yank it overhead) and water start again before drift stacks up. If the wind or the tangle beats you, stash it and switch to self-rescue mode.

What you do with the bar decides how the rest of the incident goes. Hold it, and you land attached to a canopy that may still be powered, inside its line field, with tension you do not control. Throw it, and the situation collapses into something simple. Throw the bar downwind and away from your fall line. Downwind because that is where the wing wants to go anyway, and it puts the canopy on the far side of the bar from you. Away from your fall line because the one geometry you must avoid is landing on top of your own lines.
Then deal with your body. Fall flat and long (belly, back, or side) rather than feet-first and vertical. Flat falls disperse impact and, more importantly, keep you shallow: the foil is at wing-mast depth right where you left it, and a deep feet-first entry near the board is how people find it. Cover your head with your arms. If you have any steering left in the fall, go upwind or to the side of the board, never over the nose into the path the foil is still traveling.
A note on speed: most beginner wipeouts happen at low speed, mid-takeoff or in a stall, and those are gentle. The ones that hurt are powered falls at riding speed. As speed rises, the throw-the-bar reflex matters more, not less. This is exactly the reflex you also need for gust management, where dropping the wing on purpose is a legitimate move.
Surface, and before you take a single swim stroke, look. Locate three things: the board (tugging on your leash), the bar, and the canopy. The lines run between the bar and the canopy, and some of them are underwater where you cannot see them. This is the moment beginners get wrong: they sprint for the nearest piece of gear and swim straight through the invisible part of the line field.
The rule is: approach from the bar, never from the canopy. Swim to the bar, pick it up, and gather the lines toward yourself hand over hand. Parawing lines are short (a few meters, not kite-length), so gathering the full set takes seconds. Once the lines are in your hand, nothing can wrap you that you do not already control.
If you surface and lines are already on you (across an arm, around a leg, over the shoulder), the protocol is: stop, float, confirm zero tension, then unwrap one wrap at a time starting from the bar end. Kicking and spinning tightens wraps. Tension is the only thing that makes a thin line dangerous; a slack bridle line is just string. Confirm the canopy is collapsed on the water before you touch anything. Then water start and ride. Aim for speed, and not out of pride: every minute in the water is drift, and drift compounds. If a recovery is running past several minutes in open water, stop trying to save the session: stash the wing, and switch to the self-rescue and drift protocol while you still have the energy to paddle.
Do these on purpose, in friendly conditions, before a wipeout does them to you.
