Before anything else, confirm no line is crossed or wrapped. Do this off the board, floating, never mid-ride. Short 2–4 m bridle lines make this quick, and color-coded bridles speed it up further.
Hold the parawing with your rear hand, support yourself on the board, and crawl on sideways from behind into a kneeling position. Entering windward keeps the canopy downwind of you and the lines clear of the foil.
Sit or straddle the board for stability and grab the leading edge. In lighter wind, bunch the leading edge together to drain water out of the canopy; a soaked parawing sitting on the surface will not inflate.
Toss the wing up and let it trail downwind at or just above the surface. Let airflow get under the leading edge and inflate it; do not yank the bar to full power overhead.
Control the flying wing one-handed while your free hand positions the board roughly across the wind. This is your launch window: enough line tension to hold the canopy, not enough pull to drag you off before you are set.
Get to your knees, then your feet, before sheeting in. In strong wind keep the grip light and let the harness take the load instead of fighting the pull with your arms.
A parawing spends most of its life wet. Unlike an inflatable wing it has no bladder holding it off the surface, so the moment you drop it, finish a stash cycle, or fall, you are looking at a soaked piece of cloth and a handful of thin lines floating around your board. Getting it flying again from that position is the water launch. Not an edge case, either: it is the default start for every session that does not begin ankle-deep on a beach, and the exact position you return to after every failed takeoff.
The sequence is short and it is the same every time. Every shortcut, though (skipping the line check, launching a waterlogged canopy, powering up before you are on the board), costs more time than doing it properly, and some shortcuts put lines around your foil or your leg.
The step cards give you the order. What decides whether the launch works is what you do before the throw.
Sort your lines while floating, off the board or sitting on it. Never while riding, never “on the way up.” Run your eyes (or fingers) from bar to canopy. Short 2–4 m linesets are the parawing’s structural advantage here: a tangle that would be a ten-minute kite problem resolves in seconds. Color-coded bridles help a lot (Ozone, F-One, Ensis all mark left/right), while single-color linesets are the most commonly cited downside of otherwise good wings, because when everything is the same color you are tracing lines by feel with cold hands. Take a crossed line seriously. It makes the canopy spiral on inflation, and a spiraling canopy in the water re-tangles itself faster than you can react.
Most parawings also mark the leading-edge center panel. Use it. When the wing is a wet lump on the surface, that marked panel is how you re-orient the canopy so the leading edge faces the wind before you throw.
Finn Spencer’s method (Duotone/WING DAILY) is the cleanest I know: approach the board from the windward side, hold the parawing in your rear hand, support your weight on the board, and crawl on sideways from behind into a kneeling position. Windward entry matters for two reasons. First, the canopy stays downwind of you, where it wants to be, with lines running away from your body rather than across it. Second, the foil is under the leeward rail, so entering from windward keeps every line on the opposite side of the board from the mast and wings, which is where line-around-foil tangles are born.
For the launch itself, sit on or straddle the board. That beats kneeling for the throw, because stability is what you are short of: one hand is fully committed to the wing while the board bounces under you. Knees come later, feet last.
A wet parawing lying on the water will not inflate. This is the single most common beginner failure. In wind under roughly the mid-teens there simply is not enough energy to peel a waterlogged canopy off the surface, so you do the work yourself: gather the leading edge into a bunch, let the water run out of the canopy, then throw it skyward, up and downwind in one motion. Do not try to place the wing. Toss it into moving air and let the airflow finish the job.
Once it catches, resist the instinct to yank the bar overhead at full power. Feed the power in. Let the wind get under the leading edge, let the canopy take shape at or just above the surface, and only then bring it up. Yanking a half-inflated canopy collapses the trailing edge and puts you back at step one, the same failure mode as over-sheeting a beach launch.
With the wing flying, align the board roughly 90 degrees to the wind. This crosswind alignment is your launch window: the canopy sits in the wing window with enough line tension to stay pressurized, but the pull is sideways-forward rather than dragging you downwind off the board. Straight downwind you lose line tension and the canopy falls. Too far upwind and you are luffing.
Hold the wing one-handed (front/downwind hand for most riders) and use the free hand on the board to get from sitting to kneeling to standing. In strong wind expect constant, insistent pull: keep the grip light, hook in if you ride a harness, and let the spreader bar carry the load. A stiff arm fighting the pull tires you before you have ridden a meter and makes every gust a balance event.
From here you are into the takeoff proper: building board speed on an angle about 45 degrees between crosswind and downwind, pumping the canopy in sync with the foil. That is its own skill with its own failure modes, covered in water start and takeoff. In marginal wind, MACkite’s S-Start (pointing 10–15 degrees off downwind and using a swell’s backside as a slingshot) is the standard escape hatch, but it assumes the launch itself is already clean.
On total time: it is worth timing yours — the number falls fast with repetition and stalls when your line discipline is sloppy.
Water launching is unglamorous, which is exactly why it repays drilling: you will use it on every session, every wipeout, and every redeploy for the rest of your parawing career. The riders who look effortless getting moving are not stronger throwers; they are better line-sorters. Start there, then work through the rest of the beginner curriculum in order.

It is a core skill, not a workaround: every stash-and-redeploy cycle later in your progression starts from exactly this position.
Less than a wing needs to get you foiling, but do not learn the water launch there: steady, gust-free wind with a bit of margin makes everything easier. In marginal wind a wet canopy is the main enemy: you must drain and throw it, because there is not enough wind to lift water weight off the surface.
Almost always one of three things: the canopy is waterlogged, a line is crossed, or you are yanking the bar instead of letting airflow do the work. Drain the leading edge, sort lines while floating and off foil, then toss the wing and feed power in gradually.
One hand on the bar (usually the front/downwind hand) once the canopy is flying, so the other hand is free to stabilize the board and help you to your knees. Two hands are for the moment of power-up and for building speed afterward.
