What Is Parawing Foiling? The Sport Defined by the Stash

Direct answer: Parawing foiling is a watersport where you ride a hydrofoil board powered by a small, packable soft canopy (the parawing) flown on short lines from a hand-held bar. Its defining move is the stash: mid-ride you collapse the canopy, pack it into a waist belt, and foil hands-free on swell, then redeploy it to ride back upwind. The sport began on August 21, 2024, when Greg Drexler of Boardriding Maui released the Maliko V1, the first upwind-capable parawing.

I raced the full first season of the SFT Downwind Parawing World Cup in 2026 and finished the year second overall; the final standings are on the Lake Garda results page. Before that I was one more crossover foiler standing on a beach, untangling lines, wondering why nobody had written the sport down properly. This page is that write-down. What parawing foiling actually is, why one maneuver defines the whole discipline, how it differs from the sports you probably already do, what gear it takes, and where things stand after the first World Cup season. What exactly is a parawing?

A parawing is a small, inflation-free soft canopy (think parafoil, not paraglider) flown on very short bridle lines (typically 2–4 m) from a hand-held bar. No struts, no pump, no leading-edge bladder. The whole thing weighs so little and packs so small that you can stuff it into a pouch on your waist while riding.

That last property is the whole point. A parawing powers a hydrofoil board the way a kite or wing does, getting you on foil and driving you upwind, but unlike either it disappears when you don’t need it. You stash it mid-ride, foil hands-free on swell energy, then deploy it again to get back upwind and do it all over.

The sport is young and precisely datable. Per The Inertia, “the discipline burst onto the scene when Greg Drexler of Boardriding Maui debuted the Maliko V1, the first upwind-capable parawing, on August 21, 2024 — a launch that sent shockwaves through the windsports community.” Precursors existed: Sam Reynolds of Five O was towing parafoils on Maui in 2023, and Cynthia “Cynbad” Brown experimented with rescue-parachute downwinders. But Drexler’s vertical control bar and upwind capability made it a sport rather than a stunt. The adoption speed is unlike anything windsports has seen: Bowen Dwelle, writing in Foiling Magazine, described it directly: “Something big happened in the summer of 2024… these lightweight, collapsible canopies are being adopted with a rapidity and enthusiasm unmatched even by the rise of winging itself just a few years ago.” By 2026 our specs database lists 40 models from 18 brands: BRM, Ozone, Gong, Duotone, F-One, Flysurfer, North, Ensis, Flow and Aeryn among them, with Naish, Triple Seven, AFS and others piling in.

A note on names, because the sport hasn’t settled on one. You will see the same object called a parawing, pocket wing, lowkite (Gong’s term), D-wing (Flow’s), or P.T. (“para-tow wing”) at Triple Seven, and the activity called parawinging or parawing foiling. It is all one sport, and it is not paragliding: a paraglider is an aircraft you hang under; a parawing is a hand-flown traction canopy you stand apart from and can throw away into a belt. One design axis matters more than any other and shows up in every technique article on this site: single-skin versus double-skin. Single-skins (BRM Maliko/Kanaha, Ozone Pocket Rocket, Flysurfer POW) deploy fast, sit deeper in the wing window, and pull downwind when depowered: quick to stash, adequate upwind. Double-skin and ram-air designs (BRM Paia, Triple Seven P.T. Hybrid) keep driving upwind even fully sheeted out and tack far better, at the cost of packability. Reflex single-skins (Flow D-Wing) split the difference. Which one you fly changes how you stash, how you tack, and how the wing behaves when things go wrong.

The stash: one maneuver that defines the whole sport

Every windsport has a power source; parawinging is the only one where making the power source vanish mid-ride is the core skill. Stashing means depowering the canopy onto its front lines, gathering the lines, wrapping the bundle against the bar, and stuffing it into a stash belt, all while your board keeps flying on foil. Then you ride pure swell: no wing in your hands, no lines in your vision, nothing between you and the glide.

On timing, nobody has published a measured study of the stow, and every figure in circulation is somebody’s estimate. A drilled stow is quick, but anyone who has actually learned it will tell you the early attempts are much uglier. On the redeploy side, forum riders on the Progression Project cite roughly 50–75% clean-redeploy rates when starting out, which tells you where the real learning curve lives.

The stash is also where the sport’s economy of effort comes from. Some BRM riders fly the wing for under a minute, stash it, and ride a single downwind send for 45 minutes. James Casey packs down while already up on foil so the run never stops flowing. Kai Lenny used a parawing to tow himself into waves at Hookipa on a SUP longboard, stash, and surf: the crossover ceiling of the concept in one session.

Because everything hangs on this maneuver, three of the most important pages in the curriculum are stashing mid-ride, redeploying on water, and the deep-water repack, which nobody else teaches, for when a stash goes wrong far from shore. Brand systems differ enough to matter (Ozone’s Stash Harness and PowerPack stash-and-glide wing, BRM’s belts and the S3’s D-Grip handle, Duotone’s Stash concept); BRM’s own parawing video library is the best manufacturer reference for their system.

Parawinging next to wingfoiling, kitefoiling and downwind SUP

Two of those rows drive everything about technique. First, the horizontal pull. You cannot yank yourself up onto foil the way you can with a wing; you must build board speed, which is why beginners need bigger boards, bigger foils and steadier wind. Second, line management. Thin bridles tangle, snag harness hooks, and can injure you. Walking your lines is to parawinging what checking your leash is to surfing.

A question kitefoilers ask on every forum: isn’t this just an unhooked kite on short lines? Mechanically it’s close. The canopy tech borrows straight from kite design, as BRM’s Scott Drexler says: “The parawing borrows from the kite technology, so in a way it’s bringing it all together.” But the short lines change everything downstream: launch from your hand with no assistant, a wind window small enough to manage in surf, an unobstructed view upwind, and the part no kite can copy: the stash.

Versus downwind SUP, the framing comes from the downwind community itself: the parawing is the easiest on-ramp to downwinding, because it replaces the hardest skill in foiling (the paddle-up) with a wind-powered takeoff, and replaces the shuttle logistics with an upwind leg. Greg Drexler’s line: “I haven’t had a pump in my car in… I don’t even remember when. And I don’t miss it.”

Gear anatomy: what you actually need

The parawing. Sized like a wing quiver or about 0.5 m smaller. BRM’s guidance puts most 70–85 kg riders in moderate wind on a 4.0–5.5 m single-skin. The board. Mid-length is the default; more volume than your wing board while learning. Duotone’s weight chart: 60–70 kg riders on roughly 85–100 L with a 900–1100 cm² foil; 80–90 kg on ~115 L with 1100–1350 cm².

The foil. Bigger and more efficient than you’d wing on, because the horizontal pull means board speed does the work: ~1100–1400 cm² front wing at aspect ratio 7–9 is the widely cited learning window; advanced downwind riders race on 700–1000 cm². The foil selector matches wing, weight and discipline.

Harness and stash belt. Most riders run a kite-style spreader-bar harness for upwind legs and a dedicated stash belt or pouch. Caveat from Bowen Dwelle (The Inertia): skip the harness line for short wave laps. It’s pure tangle risk.

Safety kit: non-negotiable. A parawing does not float; per Duotone, a dropped wing “flies a few meters, lands on the water, and then collapses” with only the bar on the surface. So: board leash always (low-profile, tangle-resistant), wing usually leashless to avoid bridle tangles, PFD, whistle, phone in a pouch, and a line cutter. Daniel Paronetto’s near-miss stories on Foil Life Podcast #91 are required listening before your first downwinder. The hazards are real: a downed canopy under wave load acts like a dragnet, and a parawing cannot restart you in dying wind the way a paddle can.

Who should try it, and who should wait

This is not a first watersport. Every credible source agrees. Duotone states that parawinging “is considerably more challenging than Wing Foiling” and that “the largest group of Parawingers comes from Downwind Foiling.” Matt Kaufmann, who has tested 18 parawings, puts it bluntly: “Remember, it’s a different sport. You need more balance, more wind per square meter of cloth and also more nerves.”

You’re ready if you already foil independently in any discipline: wing, kite, prone, SUP. Kite or paraglider background shortens the line-management curve. You’re the ideal candidate if you’re a downwinder tired of shuttle runs, a winger who wants hands-free wave riding, or a kitefoiler who wants the whole rig on your hip instead of in a bag. Balz Müller’s take on where this goes: “Parawinging could be the ultimate water sport discipline. It’s so pure and connected… We’re on v1 — imagine the v3 in a couple of years!”

You should wait if you can’t yet foil at all, or if your local wind is gusty and onshore over a shorebreak: the failure modes (tangled lines in white water, no-float wing, no restart in a lull) punish exactly those conditions. Read self-rescue and drift before you decide the sport is for you, not after your first long swim.

The progression path

The learn hub sequences the whole curriculum. It runs in three tiers, with a safety layer underneath all of them.

Beginner: the spine. Ground handling and lines comes first and is not skippable; walking your lines before every launch is the single most important pre-flight habit in the sport. Then water launch, water start and takeoff (where the horizontal-pull problem gets solved with board speed and, in marginal wind, MACkite’s S-Start method), and riding upwind. Flysurfer’s free POW Academy series is the best structured video companion for this tier.

Intermediate: the identity skills. Stashing, redeploying, jibes with the wing in hand, then toeside and tacks, with the caveat that tacks are feasible but design-dependent, and weak toeside is the most common wall riders hit. Gust management and wipeout recovery belong here too, not at the end.

Advanced: the payoff. Downwind glide with a stowed wing, pumping and connecting bumps, wave riding sequences (deploy, speed, stash, surf, kick out, redeploy), and the nascent freestyle and 360s frontier, reported as a frontier, because that’s what it is.

The safety layer, throughout. Deep-water repack and swell-tangle recovery cover the failure modes nobody else documents; self-rescue and drift covers the swim you hope never to make; parawing fitness covers the body that has to execute all of it.

Realistic timeline: an experienced foiler gets first rides within a session or two, a reliable stash within weeks, and clean tacks… eventually. Full repack competence in deep water is what separates riders who can do downwinders from riders who should not yet be offshore.

State of the sport: 2026, the first World Cup season

2026 is the year parawinging became a sanctioned sport. The SFT (Surf Foil World Tour) launched the first-ever Downwind Parawing World Cup with three stages: Leucate, France (Mondial du Vent, April 22–26), Cabarete, Dominican Republic (June 18–21), and Lake Garda, Italy (Foiling Week, July 2–5). The race format is hybrid downwind (upwind, crosswind and downwind legs, judged on speed and wing management), with Leucate’s full-speed beach finish as the signature image of the season. The rulebook was literally co-written mid-event with rider feedback; that’s how new this is.

The scale is still small. Leucate drew 30 men and 9 women in the parawing division. Cabarete carried $3,000 in total prize money, against $30,000 for the SFT’s E-Foil World Cup in Shenzhen. Nobody is quitting a job for parawing prize purses yet; the sport’s knowledge economy still lives in podcasts (Daniel Paronetto’s LabRat Foiler is the only one dedicated to parawinging) rather than payouts.

The first champions are French and young. Tom Pansard, 17, won the inaugural stage at Leucate; Manon Dupé, from Guadeloupe, won the women’s and led the women’s ranking all season. Bastien Escofet won Cabarete taking 11 of 12 races (confirmed via his sponsor GONG) and closed the season as the first men’s overall world champion. Beyond the tour, the sport’s endurance ceiling moved fast: Guy Bridge rode a 400 km UK south-coast downwinder (19 h 48 m total on the water per BBC Devon) on a 3.6 m Armstrong parawing. And Maui’s Paddle Imua charity race added the first-ever parawing division in 2025 on the classic Maliko run, returning July 12, 2026. If you already foil: read ground handling and lines, size a wing with the calculator, and drill the collapse-and-relaunch cycle on land until it bores you. Is parawing foiling harder than wing foiling?

Yes. Duotone's own discipline page says parawinging is considerably more challenging than wing foiling, and it matches my own experience in the discipline. There is no rigid wing to brace against, the pull is horizontal rather than lifting, and you add line management, a skill wingfoilers have never needed. Come to it already foiling in another discipline.

How much wind do you need to parawing foil?

A parawing gets you foiling in noticeably less wind than a wing does, which is a large part of the appeal. For learning, take steady wind with a bit of margin rather than chasing the bottom of the range. Wind quality matters more than the number: gusty, holey wind is the real enemy.

Do I need to know how to wingfoil before trying a parawing?

No, but you do need to foil already in some discipline: wing, prone, SUP, or kite foiling. Per Duotone, the largest group of parawingers comes from downwind foiling. If you have never flown anything, expect the line-management side of the curve to be steep, and drill ground handling on land before you get wet.

How much does a parawing cost?

US retailer listings retrieved in July 2026 put the Ozone Pocket Rocket V2 at $1,229 (Silent Sports). Budget options exist: the Gong Lowkite Plus starts from €309. Board, foil, harness and safety kit come on top if you don't already own them.

Can you jump with a parawing?

Not as an established practice. As of mid-2026, jumping is forum speculation, not a discipline. Kai Lenny has reportedly landed some airborne maneuvers, but Duotone builds its dedicated parawing board with a front-strap-only option specifically to avoid jumping. Treat freestyle as a frontier, not a curriculum.
